A doula is a trained birth professional who provides continuous physical and emotional support to a mother and her partner before, during, and after childbirth. Childbirth is a very complex process. In modern society, the safety of obstetrical care and love from the partner reassures many mothers-to-be. However, A doula is trained to provide individualized care, continuous reassurance and comfort. Doula’s main goal is to enhance communication between a women and her family, midwives and physicians. With a doula present, the father gets a chance to enjoy the birth of the baby and work as a team with the Doula to support mother’s needs.
Studies show that when doulas attend birth, labours are shorter with fewer complications, there is less need for technical aids (i.e Caesarean sections and fetal extraction tools), and there is greater maternal satisfaction. Also, babies are generally healthier and the enhanced mother-infant relationship improves breastfeeding. A naturopathic Doula uses her medical trainin
a midwife as her role is purely emotional, physical and educational rather than clinical or medical.
