Mainstream medicine does not emphasize the significance of poor nutrition as a major contributing factor in a wide range of health disorders. Although most people are aware of the benefits of wholesome nutrition, the media-driven health hype and the range of conflicting information is often overwhelming and confusing.

I hear the above question all the time. It is a legitimate question and I am pretty sure we all wondered about it one time or another. Realistically, this treatment can be a under the umbrella of the clinical nutrition. However, I acknowledge it separately to answer the confusion surrounding this question.

When I was in medical school I heard an analogy that I believe answers this question perfectly.

Give plants sunlight and water, and it survives —- Give human a balanced diet and he will carry out daily tasks.

Give plants a nutrient-rich fertilizer on top of the water and the sunlight, and it will thrive —- Give human the right supplement on top of the healthy diet and his cellular function will become optimal in repair and regeneration. A healing process will start.


My patients’ next question is often: ” Dr. Z, you are telling me my ancestors used supplements? This is a scam, a money making industry.”

I agree that the nutraceutical companies are making a lot of profit from supplements. Also, we all know that our ancestors did not take supplements. However, our ancestors’ life expectancy was approximately 20 years, given the limitations in food preservation and availability of medical care. The World Health Organization announced in 2011 that today, human life expectancy is approximately 80 years. The effect of supplements to drive and support this large gap in life expectancy cannot be dismissed. To put in nutshell:
