“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” ~Hippocrates

“Why supplements? I’m eating a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, no fat or sugar. I take enough protein and I exercise regularly. Aren’t you the one who told me “let the food be your medicine”, Dr. Z?” ~ Patient asking Dr. Z
I hear the above question all the time. It is a legitimate question and I am pretty sure we all wondered about it one time or another. Realistically, this treatment can be a under the umbrella of the clinical nutrition. However, I acknowledge it separately to answer the confusion surrounding this question.
When I was in medical school I heard an analogy that I believe answers this question perfectly.
lants vs. Human
Give plants sunlight and water, and it survives —- Give human a balanced diet and he will carry out daily tasks.
Give plants a nutrient-rich fertilizer on top of the water and the sunlight, and it will thrive —- Give human the right supplement on top of the healthy diet and his cellular function will become optimal in repair and regeneration. A healing process will start.
My patients’ next question is often: ” Dr. Z, you are telling me my ancestors used supplements? This is a scam, a money making industry.”
I agree that the nutraceutical companies are making a lot of profit from supplements. Also, we all know that our ancestors did not take supplements. However, our ancestors’ life expectancy was approximately 20 years, given the limitations in food preservation and availability of medical care. The World Health Organization announced in 2011 that today, human life expectancy is approximately 80 years. The effect of supplements to drive and support this large gap in life expectancy cannot be dismissed. To put in nutshell:
Supplements are the bridge between premature death due to average nutrition and living healthy into our 80s on an optimum nutrition.
As your doctor, I make sure to give you supplements from reliable sources that are most suitable to address your dietary needs.
“All that man needs for health and healing has been provided by God in nature, the challenge of science is to find it.” ~ Paracelsus
Botanical medicine utilizes the healing power of herbs to balance the body, treat ailments, and promote wellness. As the interest for natural therapy grows in Western society, health food stores and clinics or even supermarkets carry more herbal remedies than before. Medicinal quality of plants are used for almost every condition from enhancing the immune system to treating depression. Herbs can be given in various forms including tea, pill, liquid (tincture), salves, or oils.
However, herbal products are unregulated and they are often mislabelled and may contain contaminants. Dr. Z is aware of this fact and she only uses professional suppliers who offer high quality products. Dr. Z also believes that when used properly, botanical medicine is as effective as conventional medicine with fewer side effects.
Dr. Z works with you to customize an individualized treatment regimen while taking into consideration herb-drug and herb-nutrient interactions. She also takes into account the possibility of allergic reactions in customizing your treatment plan.
